PROJECT SETTING

Hazel Avenue CorridorHazel Avenue is an important north/south arterial roadway in Sacramento County that extends from Folsom Boulevard, across US 50 and the American River bridge, and stretches six miles north to the Placer County line. It provides one of the limited number of American River crossings for both Sacramento County and regional travel. Due to the substantial growth in the surrounding areas, the travel demands on Hazel Avenue have resulted in congestion. During the A.M. peak period, traffic routinely queues from Curragh Downs Drive to Madison Avenue. In the P.M. peak period, a bottleneck occurs at the American River bridge where Hazel Avenue narrows from three to two lanes. North of the bridge, peak period traffic is sluggish to Sunset Avenue and up to Madison Avenue the lack of "gaps" makes it difficult for left-turns or drivers accessing adjacent properties and local streets.
